At the time of writing, the MS Maud is one of the expedition ships most commonly used on Norway itineraries. Formerly the MS Midnatsol when it operated as a coastal cruise ferry, the MS Maud underwent refurbishment to better equip it for expedition cruises. But what takes priority at all times is the coastal route timetable. As a working cargo ship and passenger ferry, port calls are only missed because of extreme weather. The ships will not wait for late cruise passengers, unless you are on a delayed Hurtigruten excursion.
Breakfast at the North Cape
The dark skies of winter in Norway form the backdrop for the legendary Northern Lights. Your ship will be your floating observatory; away from light pollution on land and traveling into the Arctic, directly under the consistently active Auroral Oval. Be sure to join our excursion Trondheim with Nidaros Cathedral to learn more about one of the most sacred buildings in all of Norway. Celebrate crossing the Arctic Circle with a 'taste' of Arctic tradition – a fun ceremony highlighted by a spoonful of cod liver oil.
Norway Expedition Cruises
Above the Arctic Circle, you’ll have a greater chance of seeing the Northern Lights illuminate Norway’s skies in winter. This is the time of year when Norway is bathed in soft light and the snowy landscapes glimmer under starlight. Sailing here for almost 130 years, we’re the experts, and will show you both its highlights and its hidden gems. For some time now, Hurtigruten has rewarded its loyal travellers through its 1893 Ambassador program.

Cycling in Trondheim
The neighbourhood’s colourful wooden wharves propped up on stilts by the river’s edge now house a variety of eateries. Up from Bakklandet is Kristiansten Fort which affords beautiful panoramas of the city and fjord. The trip from Tromsø to Trondheim is probably the most beautiful and best known of our routes.
Day Norwegian Voyage: Southbound Svolvær to Bergen
The Norwegian coastline experiences famously changeable weather and rain is possible–perhaps even likely–at any time of the year. This sister company offers expedition cruises all over the world, including Antarctica, Galapagos and Iceland, among others. The excursion program presented is an indication of some of the excursions that may be available during your voyage. Take a walk around the cobblestone streets of the old town and tour the lively port. You can also head up to the old watchtower at Varden viewpoint for lovely panoramic views. Perhaps treat yourself to quality coffee and a Nordic patisserie in one of the Bakklandet district’s many chic cafés.
By the time we reach Kirkenes after breakfast, you’ll have travelled further east than St. Petersburg and Istanbul. As the ship starts its voyage south, remember that you’ve seen only half of what Norway’s coastline offers. The coast of Norway is full of surprises, from epic fjords and towering mountains to lonely islands and beautiful fishing villages.
Get closer to nature with our small expedition boats
According to legend, seven beautiful troll princesses were caught outside as the sun rose as they fled from an unwanted suitor. The sun turned them into the seven beautiful mountains you see today. In summer, there might just enough daylight to see the amazing view of the 222 mountain peaks across the fjord, called the ‘Molde Panorama’. Before boarding, relax in our comfortable guest lounge at the terminal. Once aboard, enjoy the first of many delicious meals made from fresh coastal produce as we depart Bergen and sail the old Viking route along the Hjeltefjord. Your voyage starts in Bergen, Norway’s second-largest city and a gateway to the fjords.
The Spitsbergen Adventurer Sundays to Fridays
The only light during the polar night comes from headlamps, the starry sky, and, if we’re lucky, the magical Northern Lights. We then sail along the beautiful coast of Helgeland to Bodø, where you can experience Saltstraumen, the world’s most powerful maelstrom, by small boat. In the afternoon, the ship sails northwest, passing the Kjeungskjær lighthouse, islets and rocky reefs. After sailing through the narrow channel of Stokksund, we head towards charming Rørvik. Founded by Viking king Olav Tryggvason in 997, Trondheim today is a unique mix of the ancient and modern.

Back in Vardø, visit the solemn Witches’ Monument and the star-shaped Vardøhus Fortress, built in 1737. The northernmost fortification of any kind, it remains in use by the military to this day. Kirkenes is where the Norwegian Coastal Express changes direction and the ship heads south. Several of the places we stopped at during the night we’ll now see during the day.
I say cruise-like experience because Hurtigruten doesn't offer the bells and whistles you might expect on bigger cruise ships. There's no casino, no show lounge or theatre, and no live musicians for example. Leaving Florø, you’ll see Stabben Lighthouse, a favorite subject for photographers. Enjoy stunning views as we cross the mouth of the Sognefjord, the longest and widest fjord in all of Norway. The second-to-last port of the day is Molde, where you can spot the tops of the Romsdal Alps. Flowers should be in bloom in this ‘City of Roses’ between mid-June and late August.
Following a stop at Honningsvåg, the ship continues then to Hammerfest, where you can see the UNESCO-listed Meridian Column. In winter, you can join an unforgettable snowmobile trip across snowy plains and perhaps spot the Northern Lights in the starry sky. Then, walk to Gamle Bybro bridge for a photo opportunity over Nid River. Our last stop of the day is the cosy fishing port of Rørvik in the picturesque Vikna archipelago. The area around Vadsø is one of the most scenic and popular birdwatching spots in the Arctic, lying directly under the migration path of birds flying from east to west.
Once aboard, enjoy the first of many delicious meals made from fresh coastal produce as we depart Bergen and sail the old Viking route along Hjeltefjord. Your voyage starts in Bergen, the second-largest city in Norway and gateway to the fjords. Founded in 1070 AD, Bergen boasts architecture influenced by prosperous 14th-century German trading organisation, the Hanseatic League.
